Heather Kunkel Schuetz

Marriage and Family Therapy Intern - UW Stout

Hi, I’m Heather, a marriage and family therapy intern completing my program at UW Stout. I am working with adults and couples here at Couples and Family Therapy Center as I finish up my hours to then become a full-time pre-licensed therapist in the fall. At that point I will be able to accept HP and BCBS insurance.  This is a great opportunity for those who would like to get started soon at a reduced rate, knowing you can stay with me and utilize your insurance in the near future if you'd like.

I love working with a wide range of clients but am especially passionate about working with couples and families to strengthen their relationships and help them find solutions to their problems together. After my first career in the court system, I also have an interest in supporting court-involved individuals and families as they navigate that challenging time.

Individual & Family Therapy  (Adults 18+)

Therapy is such an important way to take good care of yourself and your family.  I tailor my approach to your needs. Some people enjoy gaining lots of insight and understanding how their past is impacting their present. Others are looking for more solutions-oriented approaches. Your goals are my goals, and we will work together to determine how to meet them.

I enjoy working with adults of all ages to support them with:

  • anxiety or depression
  • self esteem
  • relationships, parenting, and family challenges
  • blended families and co-parenting
  • court-related challenges

Couples Therapy

If you’re a couple that’s currently struggling, know that I am very pro-relationship and will work with both of you to address your own issues while at the same time addressing the relationship dynamics between you.

Whether you are struggling with a lot of conflict, or the distance has come to the point of feeling like roommates, we aim to help couples understand each other and communicate in a way that can help them heal the hurt and find reconnection.

I am currently learning Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy under the supervision of Cindy Grajkowski who is a Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor. I am loving this powerful model that reconnects couples in such a deep and meaningful way. Naturally I also use skills and concepts from other couples therapy masters such as John Gottman, Esther Perel, and more.

In addition to improving emotional and physical connection, I have a special interest in supporting couples with:

  • separation and divorce,
  • adjusting to life after divorce,
  • the challenges of blended families
  • parenting and co-parenting.

Clinical Approach

I strive to create a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space where clients feel heard and supported as we work together to build healthier relationships and stronger families.

I am a pretty directive therapist and am active in my sessions. I am comfortable pointing out patterns and asking hard questions when I feel like it’s helpful, not just providing validation. I provide a fair amount of psychoeducation because I believe when we know better, we do better.

Hobbies: When I’m not working, I enjoy reading, trying new restaurants, and traveling. I spend as much time as possible with my husband, daughter, two wonderful step-children, and our little dog.
